World qualification means dinghy delight for Midhurst youngster

Midhurst's Rory Burdock is making waves in the dinghy sailing world.

The 12-year-old sails in a cadet sailing dinghy, a two-man craft like a scaled down yacht. Burdock is crew, Andrew Smith from Lymington the helm.

Burdock is attached to Frensham Sailing Club which has a cadet fleet. He attends Bohunt School in Liphook.

He started sailing just under three years ago and he and Smith were very successful in 2010, winning a number of opens and winning the UK National Championships held in Torquay. Following a drawn-out weather-affected qualification process that entailed racing all over the country, the duo have qualified to represent Great Britain at the Cadet World Championships to be held in Germany on the Baltic Sea in a few weeks’ time.

They are one of just seven pairings from GB and will take part in ten days-plus of competition against 17 other nations which include sailors from as far away as Argentina and Australia.
