WORTHING HIT 74: NOW IT'S SCOTTISH

WORTHING Rugby Club have booked a return trip to London Scottish in the Powergen Cup after a second overwhelming victory.

While Worthing were whipping St Albans 74-3 with 12 tries after scoring 10 in the previous round against Oxford Harlequins, the tartaned exiles were winning at Basingstoke in readiness for the clash in the first round proper at the Athletic Ground on September 18.

Scottish are in a major recovery period and on an upward surge since the onset of professional rugby which sent them tumbling from their lauded first-class status of the 1980s and down into the depths the new league pyramid. They were the opposition in an historic National Cup tie at the same venue in January 1987, when Worthing were the first Sussex club to reach the last 32 but lost 29-12.

Now the exiles have climbed back as far as Worthing's division '” London 1 '” and they entertain Worthing in the league a week after the upcoming cup tie, on September 25.

Worthing's reaching the preliminary round on Saturday meant the postponement of the opening league match at London Nigerians so the programme will begin with Worthing at home to Thanet Wanderers this Saturday.
