WORTHING PAIR TO GET TO THE OLYMPICS?

THE FIRST possible Worthing hopes for the Beijing Olympic Games emerged on the seas off France this month. Catamaran sailors Jonnie Hutchcoft and Robby-Jon Garcka began there '” on an Atlantic swell in the Bay of Biscay, in the huge Eurocat meeting hosted at Carnac, Brittan '” what may be their journey to the Far East Olympiad for 2008.

The newly-hatched Worthing Yacht Club duo had marked their competitive debut at Worthing by dominating an open world qualifying meeting for the Formula 18 class. A week later they took the overnight ferry to St Malo, woke up and spent the next two days working their way towards the status of Britain's highest-placed boat at Carnac.

The fleet of 300 was peppered with world champions and Olympic crews but Hutchcroft and Garcka were sixth out of the 150 in the Formula 18s.
