Worthing RFC captain James Arthur’s weekly column (March 4)

It’s no secret that Newbury are struggling in National 2 this season but they have been improving week by week and always score tries.

They picked up their first win against Canterbury earlier in February and, although we had a few changes in the side this week, we were not taking this game lightly.

Will Stutchbury started his first game for the club in the second row, Pete Cleveland started at hooker, Mike Marsh was at scrum half and Jack Maslen started on the wing. We also welcomed Harry Chatfield onto the bench for his first taste of first-team rugby.

The game was one we were expected to win and one we did win comfortably.

The challenge was to stop them scoring and to take pride in our defence. Will Green had set us the target of not allowing Newbury to score a try and if it wasn’t for one rampaging run down the wing from their prop, we would have succeeded in the shutout.

As for our scoring, we started in the first minute and continued to score at regular intervals throughout the game.

As the second half progressed and the rain continued to pour down, the mud became a bit of a leveller, but when the opportunity arose we still took our chances well. Credit to Newbury, who never gave up and were strong in the set piece.

Other results this week saw wins for Taunton, Richmond, Southend, Clifton, Jersey and Ealing.

This week we welcome Henley to Raiders HQ and we are looking to gain some revenge for the last-minute loss we had at their place earlier in the season.

To go with this, the club has organised a Ladies Day at the club in aid of Cancer Research UK’s Breast Cancer Campaign, Join the Fight for Women’s Survival and Love Your Hospital.

There is a ladies only marquee for lunch, a fashion show, live music after the game and lots of other entertainment.

To top it all, we get the dubious pleasure of playing in a bespoke pink kit.

The shirts will also be auctioned off after the game, along with a few chosen players.
