The hockey season is back with a bang - and Chichester's men's first team began it with a fine away win at Old Georgians.

Old Georgians 1 Chichester 3

South premier division one

Chichester started well, forcing OGs on to the back foot for first ten minutes.

Alex Baxter popped up to score from a good move involving Gerald Cox – his first goal for the club.

Chichester extended their lead soon after with a Gerald Cox drag flick after Alex Holton’s skill drew a foul.

Chichester were unable to capitalise on further chances, Martin Gough and others going close.

The final five minutes of the half saw OGs put pressure on the away side’s D but strong work from Steve Spear and Jason Collins kept them at bay.

Chichester started the second half as they did the first but the game became stretched. Chances went begging but Alex Thakore finally converted one to put the game beyond OGs.

A late consolation from a penalty corner saw Dan Godsmark’s clean sheet surrendered but Chichester looked comfortable in a solid win.

Chichester Ladies 1 Surbiton 16

South Clubs Women’s League

Reshuffled Chichester began positively but Surbiton reacted well, leading to a number of opportunities and goals before half-time.

The second half saw Chichester needing to defend stoutly against waves of Surbiton attacks. Surbiton continued to convert the chances they created.

Austin superbly deflected in a goal giving Chichester something to cheer after a hard day at the office.

South League Hants/Surrey div two

Midway through the first half Woodruff found himself free at the top of the D and rifled in an unstoppable shot off the underside of the bar.

In the second half, Pendle coolly slotted home from a short corner.

City of Portsmouth came back into the game but the defence held strong and keeper Gotham was called on only on two occasions. Chichester held on to run out deserved winners and head this weekend away to Croydon.

Centurions 1 Horsham Ladies IV 1  

Ladies’ Sussex League

Initially Horsham had the majority of the possession, but Centurions applied pressure in midfield and Claire Mealing and Anna Pordage seized every opportunity to push forward.

Centurions couldn’t convert two short corners and Louise Thew was denied.

Thew made a superb attacking run past three defenders to score an impressive goal. Minutes before the half-time whistle, Horsham equalised when they snatched a rebounded ball from a goal kick.

The second half saw Horsham attack with vigour but Centurions’ defence was solid. Dramatically, Centurions were awarded a short-corner just before the final whistle blew but the ball slipped past the post by inches.

Worthing II 10 Chi Ladies III 0

Some speedy attacks on goal by Heidi Dunster kept Worthing on their toes. Unfortunately, even great defending by Georgia Beckingsale and first-time keeper Klare Cosens, who made some incredible saves, couldn’t stave off the relentless attacks from the opposition and the final score was 10-0.

Chichester’s player of the match was Cosens.

Lotte Margarson produced a spectacular goal from a short corner, while Kate Ratcliffe and woman of the match Heidi Dunster led attacks on goal, as the thirds held Horsham 1-1.

Chichester IV 5 Poole 2

South League Hants div four

Chichester opened their new campaign with a fine win.

They found themselves two behind following a well worked short corner and some good open play by Poole.

Andrew McCartin scored a brilliant goal for Chichester, quickly followed by a classy reverse flick finish from Gammon after great work from Farr.

Chichester took the lead when Procter set up McCartin.

Gammon, Procter and Worthen combined for Gammon to score his second. A sizzling run from Procter set up Durrant for a 5-2 lead.

Penguins II 1 Chi Chipmunks 2

Sussex open div three

Many of the Chipmunks team were playing for the first time at this level – but you wouldn’t have known it.

A flashing drive from the hard-working Sturdy was neatly deflected in by the reliable Creswick.

Futcher slotted home after the break to make Chichester feel more comfortable. Penguins got on the score sheet but Chichester were determined to see the game out and Penguins were reduced to ten men.

Chichester Bad Habits 1 Southwick Ladies II 7

The Habits were undaunted by having only nine players for this game.

They absorbed the pressure really well during the first half with everyone battling hard, but Southwick seized their chances to make the half-time score 6-0.

The Habits owned the second half as Southwick wilted under the heat, demonstrating flashes of brilliance through keeper, defence, midfield and forwards.

A well-struck corner by Finn rebounded off the Southwick keeper for a strike by Truss which was neatly pipped over the line by Kirk to give the Habits their first and only goal.

Against the run of play, Southwick got a further goal from a ‘P’ flick following a poor tackle in the D to put the final spoils at 1-7 in their favour.

High temperatures made for an interesting challenge for the veterans.

Chris Pacey opened the scoring for the Friars, followed by a second from his brother Mark. The Friars increased the lead with an Olly Lane-Smith short corner.

Haslemere were rewarded with a goal before Mark Pacey scored his second.

Chichester Deacons 2 Petersfield 4

Chichester were guilty of squandering opportunities and, against the run of play, Petersfield took the lead midway through the half. But Ed Marley did bring Chichester level before half-time.

Petersfield went ahead again before Chichester stirred and Martin Hughes drew them level. Petersfield struck back quickly to regain the lead and they increased the lead from the spot.

Chichester had a fair share of the play before Penguins scored their first.

Chichester responded well but Penguins went onto score two more goals.

Despite a penetrating run and well-finished goal by Gibbons, Worthing were the victors in this friendly.
