Year to remember is down to a very Tidy performance by Heather

It has been a very successful 12 months or more for Heather Tidy, Bognor GC's ladies' champion.

In September last year she set a new course record with a score of 70. She has been club champion five times since 2004 and regained her title last month. Her handicap is now three.

Heather has played for the Sussex ladies’ second team since 2005 and is now their player-manager. She has also played for the county first team, as she did recently in the national finals at Thorndon Park Golf Club, Ingrave, in which the six top counties in the country took part.

Lincolnshire were the winners, Sussex fourth. Two other Bognor members, Suzanne Taylor and Wendy Johnson, have represented the county seconds.

The ladies of Bognor GC played in their autumn meeting 18 and 32-hole foursomes competition.

A total of 66 ladies entered the medal and buttons competition. Silver winner was Denise Pratt; bronze Denise Duquemin.

Seventy-two golfers took part in the 18-hole Mens Invitation. Breakfast preceded the shotgun start for a four-ball better-ball Stableford format played off three-quarters handicap. Prizegiving was followed by an evening meal.

Having won away to Littlehampton 7½-2½, Bognor veterans were more than happy to win the home game 6½-3½.

Nineteen juniors took part in the Cowley Salver Stableford. Jordan Vincent shot his best competition round with a two-under-par gross 68.

Playing off five, he won with 43 points.

Second with 38 points was Ryan Maskell and Scott Bingham was third with 38. Jake Stoneham was fourth on 37.Winner in the over-28 handicaps was Max Littleboy with 41 points. Hayley Mackay was nearest the fifth pin, nearest the tenth was Ryan Maskell, nearest the 16th in two was Tom Stoneham and in the over-28s, Megan Tinson was nearest the 16th in three.

CHICHESTER

The Tower Trophy for players with handicaps of 29 to 36 was played on the Tower course in ideal weather conditions.

It was well-supported and Pam Hart, an early starter, set the score to beat with 38 points before Amanda Mackenzie and Sue Winterbotham pipped her with 39. Sue won the trophy on countback.

Junior player Rebecca Curd continued her recent good form by winning the Saturday Autumn Irons competition by two points from Lisa Mitchelmore with a very creditable 36 points.

COWDRAY PARK

The Podmore Trophy, an 18-hole Stableford, attracted a field of 64.

Winners were Matt Hall, Shaun White, Justin Thorpe & Matt Callow with 81 points. Second were Paul Owen, Steve Judd, Steve and Todd White on 80, on countback from Roger Murphy, Richard Whitcomb and Tim and Sam Chatwood.

Glorious late summer weather was the order of the day for the October Medal at Cowdray, with 89 taking part. Division-one winner, and overall victor, was Mark Howes with a nett score of 68. Division-two winner was Andy Morgan with 70; division three Tim Crow with 70.

A full complement of 19 teams took part in Cowdray Park seniors’ popular bi-annual competition, the Texas Scramble. After the early dew had been burned off by the sun, conditions were perfect.

The opening group, featuring four of the best seniors, set the benchmark with 61 points. This was passed by Jan de Vries, Michael Nobes, Bruce Spooner and Phillip Singer with 59.3.

They led until Dave Tilley, John Kitchener, Tony Castley and Colin Tebbutt returned with an excellent 58.8, which won them the day.

The secret of their success was consistency, with only one bogey.

The prizes were presnted by seniors’ captain Peter Burton, and the whole day, including the complicated scorecards, was superbly organised by Dave Hirons.

Cowdray Park seniors continued their busy end-of-season schedule with a home match against Puttenham Pilgrims, hoping to avenge their heavy away defeat.

Avenge it they did, in style, 5½-2½, inspired by in-form match manager Mike Burgess and recent Stableford winner Robin West, who won the opening match one up.

Derek Smith and George Crouch won by 3&2 and later, Cowdray pulled away to make it a comfortable victory in their penultimate home match.

Biggest-margin winners of the day were Gordon Kendall and Graham Evans and David Wickham and Gary Strowbridge.
