Young cricketer earns county call

A RISING star from Little Common Ramblers Cricket Club has made his first county appearances.

Callum Guest has played two matches for the full Sussex under-11s side after impressing during trial matches last month.

Father Tim said: "He's worked hard and he's thoroughly enjoyed it. We've supported him through everything he's done and we're absolutely thrilled for him. We just hope he can continue to improve and develop as a cricketer."

The 11-year-old's county bow came against Surrey earlier this month and he again made a solid contribution in the single wicket defeat of Essex on Sunday.

Callum, who plays for Little Common's under-11s, under-12s and under-13s sides, earned his place by performing well for the Eastern Eagles against the other three areas of Sussex during 'County Week'.

He got into the Eagles side courtesy of his displays at an area training programme which ran throughout the winter.

Callum would like to thank mother Suzanne, coaches Peter Winchester and Mick Allen, plus Little Common County Primary School head David Pratt for their support.

Common had another seven players attend Sussex trials and in addition to Callum, three were selected for the final games for Eastern Eagles. They were Simon Catley (u16), Elliott Guest (u14) and Joe Croft (u12).

Common junior co-ordinator Winchester said: "It is a great tribute to the work put in by all our coaches and helpers to have so many colts on the verge of Sussex recognition.

"It is no surprise to me that Callum was selected, he is a talented lad who has a smooth flowing bowling action that allows him to bowl quickly at that level. He can also bat well and likes to be aggressive, not only with his shots but with his running and fielding. He hardly ever drops a catch and most importantly he is polite and a pleasure to have around. I am sure he will do very well at county level."

Common have a big day to look forward to as their under-15 team will take on the touring Spanish team at that age group on July 23. The Spanards will be visiting the Recreation Ground in between appearing at the Oval and the Rose Bowl!
