Thanks to a generous donation and the support of publishing houses Nosy Crow, Faber and Chicken House, the charity has been able to provide 300 books to the four local food banks – in Chichester, Midhurst, Petworth and Selsey.

They have been able to source a wide range of books to appeal to different ages of children.

Children’s BookFest Chichester plan to make this an initiative they will continue in 2021.

The food banks’ CEO Joanne Kondabeka said: “At a time like Christmas, many families who are facing food poverty are unable to buy their children presents, including books.

“Bookfest has enabled Chichester District Foodbank to provide those children with a new book alongside their food parcel.

“We really thank them for their support and for putting a smile on a child’s face.”

Children’s BookFest is committed to changing the statistic that one in 11 children in the UK does not own a book of their own.

Through their ongoing work with schools and their relationship with the food banks they continue to provide books for children to own and enjoy.

During the last year, research shows that 60 per cent of children said that reading made them feel better during lockdown (National Literacy Trust)

The next festival in October 2021 will see 4,000 school children meet an author and take home a book of their own.
