“I have been writing since I was about 15 or 16, so we are talking about nearly 28 years ago now,” Rory says. “Initially it was just a hobby, but over the past couple of years, I have been doing it full time. I quit my job.

“I think I had got to the stage where it was either now or never. I was getting quite frustrated as a creative person doing a nine-to-five office-based role. It was getting frustrating, and a few things happened in my personal life. I just started thinking that life is short and that now is the moment. I thought I would give it a go.

“COVID aside, it has been slow, but with the lockdown I thought I would be able to get on with things. I must have written 50 odd songs, 20 of which were on the ukulele. I set myself the task of trying to freshen up my creativity and alleviate any writer’s block and decided to pick up a new instrument. I set myself a goal of writing a song a day for seven days. I ended up with ten songs in seven days, and then I ended up with 20 songs in 14 days. There are a few gems in there, and I have got eight that will make the next album. The working title for that is going to be Songs In Isolation.

“The new album is called Heart On My Sleeve. The album is made up of songs that were older than the songs on my previous album. They were songs that I had pitched to various opportunities, but which were eventually rejected. I thought I would cobble them together and put them on an album because I still thought they were strong songs.

“As the title suggests, they are love songs. They are quite confessional. They are quite to the point, more often than not songs where I have dressed up the meaning of the songs in metaphor.

“This is album number seven. The first one came out in 2012. My intention was just to be a singer-songwriter, but over the past ten years the idea of writing for different people and projects and working with different producers and co-writers is more the aim at the moment.

“I know my limitations as an artist. I am not the greatest singer and I know I am not the most entertaining performer so I want to be writing songs for other people. The aim is to get to the point where I am writing songs for top-ish artists. At the moment you have just got to work your way up and work with emerging artists.

“But I wanted to put this current album out for various reasons. Instead of just leaving the songs on the shelf, I thought they deserved to be heard. I just thought why not. I think my main aim is to concentrate on my song-writing, but every now and again I would like to put out an album of my own stuff. A lot of the songs are really personal to me, and I think my aim for this is just for as many people as possible to hear it and then when the time is right, I would like to be able to do a few gigs.”
