Cregan & Co celebrate the great Rod Stewart songbook at Horsham's Capitol

The show starts at 8pm in the theatre.

The band will also be delivering other hits that Jim has written over the years with other rock stars on a night featuring Ben Mills (X-Factor) on vocals and guitar.

The band was originally called Apart from Rod, and Ben reckons he’s been with them for three to three and a half years now – a great rollercoaster ride of superb music and friendship.

“I think the fact is that everyone just gets on so well,” Ben says.

“We love playing together. We all do other things, and apart from Jim, everyone in the band is a session player. We do lots of gigs for weddings and lots of other things, but when we get together it is just such a great laugh. We just really enjoy these songs that we get to play together. In most bands, in all bands, there is usually someone who gets the hump and wants to go home, but with this one, from the moment we arrive, we are all just having a laugh, and I think that’s what comes across to the audience.

“But it’s the music really. We change the set list quite a lot, and I look down the set list and I am thinking ‘Oh, great. We are doing this one! And that one!’ We are even doing some of the Cockney Rebel stuff. Well, ‘Come Up An See Me (Make Me Smile)’”

Jim was the man who came up with the song’s celebrated guitar break.

Ben admits he got involved in the band in quite a round-about way: “About two years prior to joining the band, I had a friend called Val who is a fantastic musician. She uses Harry, the drummer from Cregan & Co. She heard they were looking for a singer, and I said I would be interested. And then I heard nothing for two years… but that happens a lot as a musician. People put you forward, and then nothing happens. But I guess I stuck in Jim’s mind. They took someone else on, but it didn’t work out, and then I got a call from Harry asking if I would be interested. They kind of auditioned me for the job. I guess they had heard my YouTube and X-Factor stuff. They knew I could sing. It was more or less whether they could get on with me. I met up with them, and we just all got on like a house on fire.”

Rod is certainly aware of the band. In fact, he says Ben sounds like Joe Cocker would if he sang Rod’s songs – which is clearly a compliment in its way.

“Rod is a fan of the band. He has promised to come along to various gigs. I think I would be terrified if he did. We had Kenney Jones (ex-Faces drummer alongside Rod) in once, and half way through Baby Jane, I completely forgot the words. I know the words inside out, when I knew he was just sitting there watching me, I just lost them!”
