The singers are back at the venue following their well received concert last year during the church’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

The programme’s title comes from one item by English composer Cecilia McDowall, winner of many awards for choral works commissioned by, among others, the BBC Singers and King’s College, Choir, Cambridge. Her ‘Shipping Forecast’ received a lot of media attention and her chamber opera ‘Airborne’ was written for the centenary of World War I.

The New Sussex Singers rehearse weekly in Haywards Heath or Lewes and they have toured in Europe and the USA. Before coming to England in 2010, their director of music, Alex Roose, founded Tuckerbox Opera in Australia.

Alex’s folk song programme incorporates several styles and arrangements, mostly a capella. Though mainly from the British Isles, ‘Waltzing Matilda’ has been sneaked in too. VW’s ‘Five English Folk Songs’ and a Kings Singers sextet arrangement of ‘The Oak and the Ash’ are among the British songs, while Ireland is represented by the ‘Londonderry Air’ and Chilcott’s ‘Shenendoah’.

Tickets are £10 from St Wilfrid’s (01444 412339), Roger Floyd (01444 482642) or at the door.
