Shoreham Airshow Press Day 2012

SOME of the highlights of this year’s Shoreham Airshow were revealed at a press briefing today (Friday, August 10).

Organisers, RAFA fund-raisers and display teams were at Shoreham Airport to give a flavour of what visitors to this year’s show can expect.

This year’s show, on September 1 and 2, will feature more than 20 static aircraft, 12 aerobatics teams, 12 solo displays, two gliding teams and two parachute teams.

In addition there will be more than 70 trade and charity stalls, two flight simulators, a fun fair and a classic and vintage car show.

This year will feature a display by two Tornados from the 15 Squadron, based at RAF Lossiemouth.

Geoff Lee, assistant press officer, said: “There is lots of noise and lots of explosions and for me it is something new and exciting to look at.”

Other highlights include an RAF Valley Hawk, the Vulcan, the Swift display team and nine Tiger Moths flying in formation.

Now in its 23rd year, the Shoreham Airshow has raised more than £1.7million for the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA).

Michael Bolton, director of fund-raising at RAFA, said: “The airshow is fantastic, it is organised by volunteers and I think that is key – all of these people give their time free of charge to make it happen.”

A special Shoreham Airshow supplement will be published in the Herald and Gazette series on Thursday, August 30. The supplement will include more highlights of the show, interviews with the organisers and aviation photographs by Geoff Lee.
