The arrogant Professor Henry Higgins, a phonetics expert, makes a bet that he can transform Eliza Doolittle, a cockney flower girl, into a duchess who will be at ease in polite society. Higgins teaches Eliza impeccable speech and manners so that he can present her as a “lady” at the ambassador’s ball. Eliza’s performance is a triumph but what he has overlooked is that Eliza has a mind of her own and, once transformed out of the “gutter”, nothing can be the same again.

Pygmalion was originally banned by the Lord Chamberlain’s office for its attack on the British upper classes and expression of feminist views; today, we can enjoy the play as a witty, brilliant piece of theatre.

Yet the message Shaw conveys still packs a punch.

A Stables Theatre production directed by Andrew Bruce.
