Chichester singer and music enthusiast remembered

Mr Bastow died suddenly on Saturday, August 4, aged seventy six.

His cousin, retired Chichester solicitor Chris Doman said: “Tim was a much loved and admired Cicestrian whose home was in Chichester all his life.

“He was educated at Oakwood School and Hurstpierpoint College, and after qualifying as a pharmacist joined his family’s chemists business in North Street. Like his father and grandfather before him, he soon became a prominent and highly-respected member of the Chichester business community.

“Tim had a fine baritone voice and was deeply involved in the musical life of the city. As a member of the Chichester Amateur Operatic Society he sang many of Gilbert and Sullivan’s bass roles. He joined the Chichester Singers and for many years undertook the sometimes onerous duties of secretary. He was a key figure on the Chichester committee of the Southern Cathedrals Festival.

“His love of music was the stimulus for him to open a classical record shop, unusual in that it lay within his chemist’s shop, at first in the basement at 9 North Street and then at Northgate – an inspired undertaking which brought joy to many.

“Tim was a committed member of the family of Chichester Cathedral where he worshipped regularly and where he served with distinction as head server, guide, reader and in many other ways.

“Tim was a long standing and always active member of the Rotary Club of Chichester, serving as President in 1997/8, and being awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship in recognition of his contribution to public life.

“Tim loved his profession, his gardening, his golf and his city, but above all his family – his wife Vanessa, his three children and his seven grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by them and his legion of friends.”
