CLASSICAL MUSIC: Brighton Philharmonic

THERE were plenty of strings attached as the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra returned to their roots for their last concert but it will need a full orchestra to play out the final concert of their winter season at the Brighton Dome this Sunday, March 21 (2.45pm).

The penultimate offering was an eclectic mix of all-strings pieces, from Brandenburg to Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings to Orlando Gough's Fortune Cookies as part of the At 50 Series.

The At 50 Series continues with Jonathan Dove's Run to the edge but if modern music is not to your taste, there are plenty of other goodies to take the fancy.

The season began with a programme of Russian melodies and ends in the same vein, if perhaps a little louder, with the rousing 1812.

There is also Glinka's Overture Russian and Ludmilla.

A new innovation this season is a work selected by the Dome faithful and in some close voting, the choice was Manuel De Falla's Ritual Fire Dance.

And just to ensure it is a truly international programme, also included are the Sorcerer's Apprentice (Dukas) and An Orkney Wedding with Sunrise (Maxwell Davis).

There is a pre-concert interview on stage with members of the BPO at 1.45pm and tickets for the concert range from 8 to 30 (www.brightonphil.org.uk)
