FESTIVAL TIME: At East Preston

IT'S ready, steady, go for East Preston Festival, which comes under starter's orders on June 7, the 27th year of the village's week of fun and entertainment for all, writes Roger Green.

No one will be limbering up more for the packed programme of activities than the group of five year 6 pupils from the village junior school, who have taken up the challenge of their teacher, John Galvin, to organise the first festival fun run.

"Our aim is to get the whole community up and moving, whether it's running, jogging, walking or even crawling, it's all in the aim of fun!" say Sophie, Jack, Martyn, Chloe and Katie, who have spent six months working with the police, council officials and the festival team.

They are inviting everyone to join them at 6pm on Wednesday, starting from the Village Green and running up Sea Road to their school grounds of East Preston Junior School.

Before then, regulars from three village pubs and the British Legion Club will be straining their muscles in the tug 'o' war on Sunday afternoon on the Village Green, but for those who prefer their entertainment to be rather more sedate, the popular Art and Flowers exhibition staged by East Preston Floral Club runs from Saturday to Monday in the Conservative Hall.

Saturday night sees the Vintage Hot Five jazz band back at the Village Hall for another sizzling evening, with vocalist Georgina Banbury.

Earlier, in the afternoon, Girlguiding East Preston members hold their summer fayre and family fun day on the Lashmar Road Recreation Ground.

And on Sunday, the Village Hall will again be packed with stalls for the festival craft fair.

Next week's Littlehampton Gazette will carry festival reports and photos from the start of the week, and programme highlights for the remaining three days, including Saturday's carnival.
