Hastings Humanists’ next meeting will be held at the White Rock Hotel on Thursday (February 12) at 7.30pm.
The Humanists celebrate their sixth anniversary this year and spokesman for the group, Mike Lynott, says all are welcome to the meeting which reflects on Charles Darwin’s theories. He said: “Charles Darwin was born on February 12, 1809. In 1859 he published his book
“Today, Darwin’s theory of natural selection has been accepted (by most people) as scientific fact; advancements understanding DNA and fossil discoveries constantly add to our knowledge of the different stages of evolution.
“Hastings Humanists’ first meeting was on Darwin Day 2009. We will discuss whether there is an evolutionary basis for a sense of humour and in view of recent events in France we consider how far satirical treatment of religions is justified. Is there any truth in the idea of English humour? What sort of humour appeals to you? Puns? Slapstick? Can you recognise Irony?” Entry £3 members, £5 non-members.
