David Jacobs presents The Len Phillips Big Band, Floral Hall, Winter Garden, Wednesday, August 22, 2.30pm.
BACK by popular demand, BBC Radio 2 star David Jacobs compères this concert celebrating the very best sounds of the great swing era or “Our Kind of Music”. This fabulous 16 piece band will be joined by singers Matthew Ford (star of the 2011 BBC Prom “Hooray for Hollywood”) and Eleanor Keenan (Syd Lawrence and Andy Ross Orchestras). The all-new programme will draw on the libraries of bands such as Ted Heath, Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Harry James, Benny Goodman and Stan Kenton plus the songs of Ella Fitzgerald, Bobby Darin and Frank Sinatra. The music will be interspersed with anecdotes from Mr Jacobs about his friendships and dealings with stars such as Sinatra, Darrin and Vic Damone.
Formed in 1986, The Len Phillips Big Band is made up of sixteen of the country’s finest musicians. Between them, the players have worked with Sammy Dais Jnr., Frank Sinatra, Ted Heath, Shirley Bassey, Ken Mackintosh and John Dankworth to name but a few. The band’s latest album “What’s New?”, recorded at Pinewood Studios, has been well received on both sides of the Atlantic. It receives regular airplay on a number of radio stations including BBC Radio 2.
Over the years the band has worked with many of Britain’s biggest stars in the world of jazz and big band music. The names include Dennis Lotis, Lita Roza, Kenny Baker, Elaine Delmar and even Bert Weedon! Some twenty-five years after its inception and now under the leadership of Joe Pettitt, the band plays regularly up and down the country at concert halls, theatres, festivals and jazz clubs.
When David Jacobs and the Band came to the Winter Garden last year they were an instant success.
It is expected that large numbers will again turn out to hear these fine musicians and vocalists, with the added attraction of one of the most admired presenters of “easy listening” music of all time.
