Have a go at singing Gounod’s mass

Sussex Chorus invites singers to join in a rehearsal of Charles Gounod’s beautiful Messe Solennelle de Sainte Cecile under Alan Vincent’s direction at 7.30pm on Monday, January 26, at St Paul’s Catholic College, Burgess Hill.

Premiered on November 22, 1855, in the church of Saint Eustache, Paris, in honour of St Cecila, the patron Saint of Music, the mass received critical acclaim.

“This simplicity, this grandeur, this serene light which rose before the musical world like a breaking dawn, troubled people enormously...at first one was dazzled, then enhanced, then conquered.”

Gounod’s mass forms part of Sussex Chorus’ programme of French Sacred Music with Durufle’s Requiem, and organ solos Widor’s Toccata and Dupre’s Cortege et Litanie on March 21 in All Saints Church, Hove.

The rehearsal hall is warm and comfortable with easy parking. Music will be provided along with complimentary coffee, tea and biscuits at half time. There is no charge for the evening and visitors will receive a warm welcome.
