Vintage comes to village halls in Sussex as singing trio The Spinettes go on the road with Matthew Goodgame.
There are shows at Hartfield Village Hall on Sunday, July 17, and Crowborough Community Centre on Sunday, July 31.
Crawley-based Matthew, winner of 2004’s Musicality talent show, said: “The Spinettes started back in 2010. I started it with my wife now, my partner then, and it was just one of those in-between-jobs ideas. All the girls are West End performers or international performers, and it was a time in between jobs and we were just thinking ‘What are we going to do to earn some money?’ So we set up the group of three girls, who are all great friends, with the idea of doing vintage era music from the ’40s through to the ’60s. We started off with our first performance in front of about 20 to 25 people in a little yacht club down in Brighton, and it was such a success and people liked it so much that we just thought that this is what people want.
“That’s how it started. Within a year, the ladies had been invited to perform at 10 Downing Street. We did performances at Goodwood and at the Southbank, and then we were invited to do a charity performance. They ended up doing both 10 and 11 Downing Street. It was quite a surreal experience for them.
“Unfortunately, I was working elsewhere at the time, but it was a real honour for them to perform there. Really it took us to another level, and from then on we have just been getting booking after booking.
“We get to do a lot of weddings and corporate events.”
Matthew, who is currently in Funny Girl in the West End, comes from 15 months in Germany with Starlight Express: “So I have not really been performing with them so much, but now we have set up the idea of the village halls.”
He continues: “The whole idea of the village hall concerts is to bring the music to the community. The ’40s music was all about the community in a difficult time. It was music that brought the community together, a safe haven for people, and that’s what we want to do.”
