Work shows Bach at height of his powers

Lewes-based chamber choir Pro Musica will perform JS Bach’s magnificent St Matthew Passion at 7pm on Sunday, March 29, at St Andrew’s Church, Alfriston.

The choir is directed by Ray Maulkin and Kathryn Sargent.

Written in 1727, when Bach was Cantor of St Thomas in Leipzig, the work shows him at the very height of his creative powers.

From the drama of the opening chorus to the poignancy of ‘In tears of grief’ which concludes the work, it tells the Passion story using some of Bach’s most beautiful arias punctuated by chorus interjections.

The whole work is interspersed with a series of chorales and there will be an opportunity to join in some of these, as was intended when it was first used as a part of the Good Friday services.

Tickets can be reserved in advance or bought on the door for £12 (children under 14 free). For details, or to reserve tickets, please contact Geoff Ellis at
