Musical stars come out at night

STEYNING Music Society will celebrate its 15th season with a bumper programme of concerts for 2008.

The season starts on Saturday, March 8, when the Galliard Wind Ensemble returns to Steyning, with guest pianist Sam Haywood.

Gary Prior, of the society, said: "After regular appearances on BBC Radio 3, the Galliard Ensemble were invited to perform at many of the UK's prestigious concert venues and festivals.

"They have performed at the BBC Proms and their many CDs have received the accolade of 'critic's choice' from the Sunday Times, Gramophone and the BBC Music Magazine.

"Their programme for Steyning includes music for wind by Mozart and Ibert, and works for wind and piano by Mozart, Francaix and Poulenc."

The Powell Piano Trio will visit Steyning in May, presenting works by Haydn, Dvorak and Schubert.

All graduates of the Royal Northern College of Music, the members of the trio are currently young artists in residence at the University of Salford and pianist Ben Powell is a former Steyning Grammar School pupil.

In July, Tango Siempre presents Subitango '“ The Music and Dance of Tango Argentino.

The group will be joined by tango dancers Kicca and Giraldo for the show, which will combine live music and dance. The group will also host an afternoon workshop, open to all wannabe Strictly Come Dancers.

September will see a performance by award-winning pianist Sasha Grynyuk, who won the most recent Haverhill Sinfonia soloist competition.

The pianist, who made his concerto debut at the age of 11, will perform a programme including works by Beethoven and Chopin.

In November, the society will present the Carducci String Quartet, performing music by Haydn, Janacek and Beethoven.

Mr Prior said: "This young quartet is one of the hottest properties on the classical music scene, winning numerous international competitions and appearing at festivals throughout Europe. Their busy schedule includes their Carnegie Hall debut later this year."

All concerts will be performed at the Steyning Centre, in Fletcher's Croft, Steyning, and begin at 7.30pm. Tickets are available in advance by calling 01903 812662.
