It came third ahead of thousands of rivals and was picked up by a German travel magazine. Its reproduction of the photo, showing the busy market place in Santa Cruz, has been seen around the world.

Bill said: “I was thrilled to come third but even more delighted to be approached by View magazine of Hamburg to use my photo as a double-page spread.”

Bill is the husband of Arun District Council vice-chairman and a Bersted ward councillor Ann Smee.

She said: “Bill always manages to take picture-postcard photos.

“The fish market in Santa Cruz was an amazing place and this photograph captures it perfectly.”
