PREVIEW: In Search of a Midnight Kiss at Brighton

MOST of us have been there. It's New Year's Eve, everyone has a partner and you're facing the stroke on midnight on your own.

Wilson has that very prospect in the film In Search of a Midnight Kiss (15), and what's more, has had the worst year of his life so far and he's new to Los Angeles.

Having been found fantasising about best friend Jacob's girlfriend, he is forced to post a personal ad on Craig's List and so he meets egotistical Vivian, who is determined to be with the right guy as the clock strikes 12.

She gives him until 6pm to shape up to her wishlist and their date has to be seen to be believed. At times it's madcap and hilarious, at others touching and vulnerable.

As they ramble around LA there is bickering, flirting and even a touch of crime, but will they last till the new year?

In this black and white documentary-style film, talented Scoot McNairy plays Wilson, giving a sympathetic and realistically comic performance as he stands up to the strong-willed Vivian.

Sara Simmonds captures the difficult character of Vivian with ease and humour and they work well together to show the strange bond forming between them.

It's not all roses in this rom-com, though, and brings out all aspects of human relationships.

Directed by Alex Holdridge, In Search of a Midnight Kiss is described as the American indie discovery of the year and it's certainly captivating.
