Remembrance Sunday

YOUNG and old gathered in Alexandra Park on Sunday to remember those who gave their lives for our freedom.

More than 300 ex-servicemen, political figures and members of the public gathered in the crisp morning sunshine for the Remembrance Day service for those who fought and died in conflict.

The day's commemorations began with the Mayoral Parade from the Town Hall, led by the Mayor herself, Cllr Pam Brown, to the service by the war memorial in the park.

The Blue Stars Marching Band accompanied the marchers along Queens Road as far as Safeways where the Army Training Corps Band took the lead for the remainder of the march.

Joining the many councillors, including council leader Jeremy Birch and cllr Godfrey Daniels, and members of the public, were representatives from: Army Cadets, Guides, Brownies, Bonfire Society, Buckswood School, Army Training Corp Band, Royal Air Force Association, Royal Navy Association, Royal Artillery, Parachute Regiment, Sussex Regiment, Royal Army Service Corps, Royal Corps of Transport, St John Ambulance and the Royal British Legion and many more organisations.

Stuart Green, chairman of the Joint Council of Ex-Service Associations who organised the Mayor's Parade, said: "The day went very well indeed and there was a really good turn out. We were extremely pleased with how it all went. During the service in the park the whole of the bank at the back was full of people."

The commemorations continued into the evening with entertainment, provided by Helenswood School, and a service at the White Rock Theatre accompanied by the Melodian Choir.

Mr Green said: "The first half was the cavalcade of standards followed by the entertainment, by Helenswood School. The pupils were excellent. We were so proud of them.

"Then we had a sing-a-long with the Melodian Choir and a short break and then we returned for the service. The only down side was the theatre was only two thirds full. It would have been nice to have more people, but it was still a great success."
