ROPETACKLE: What's on at Shoreham's Ropetackle Centre

Since the (unexpectedly popular) re-emergence of "Come Dancing", everyone recognises that dancing is good for you.

Come and share the luxury of dancing to a live trio (The Earl Grey Trio, resident at the Bournemouth Pavilion Ballroom) at the Ropetackle at 2.30pm today (March 26).

With Mike Hatchard as host, there will be a rich assortment of traditional ballroom dances, as well as modern and sequence, with something for everybody of all standards '“ and, of course, tea.

Tickets are 5, to include a cup of tea. Cakes available.

Trivia at the Tackle

Trivia at the Tackle, the regular Ropetackle brainteaser with a difference, returns tonight.

There are cash prizes and video links to far-off places.

So much more than a pub quiz.

Doors open at 7.30pm for an 8.15pm start.

John Otway

Cultural highlight of the week has to be John Otway and Attila the Stockbroker's gig tomorrow (Friday, March 27) night.

In the words of one reviewer of one of their Edinburgh Fringe shows: "Finally, years after the demise of Wild Willy Barrett, John Otway has found his replacement soul-mate."

Otway performs his hits (all two of them!) and strange cover versions, while Attila deals in social, surrealist poems and songs.

There will also be excerpts from their infamous rock opera Cheryl, an everyday story of trainspotting, Satanism, drug abuse and unrequited love.

Otway first achieved notoriety with his eye-watering performance on The Old Grey Whistle Test and subsequent hit single, Really Free, in 1977.

A heady mix of blind ambition and rank incompetence was to keep this microstar shining for almost two decades, despite Otway's ability to turn any situation to his own disadvantage.

His autobiography, Rock and Roll's Greatest Failure, out-sold, by a factor of 10, all the records he had released since his first hit.

Otway went on to struggle to live up to this down-at-heel billing '“ selling out London Astoria for his 2,000th gig in 1993, filling the Royal Albert Hall in 1998 and charting at number 9 with his 2002 single, Bunsen Burner.
