BASED on real events, Timberlake Wertenbaker’s award-winning modern classic is sure to be an absolute treat for drama fans – especially with a special £10 ticket deal!

Set in Australia 1788 a boatload of British convicts arrive after eight months of hell at sea onboard a crowded, noisy, dirty boat. As the soldiers struggle to impose order on the outcasts of the old society, a benevolent and reformist governor seizes on the notion of a play. In the shadow of the gallows and the gum tree the convicts gather and rehearsals begin for The Recruiting Officer.

Powerful themes are explored in this stunningly staged production, the redemptive power of theatre and the importance of culture on civilisation through to wider ideas of community and empire and even funding for the arts.

A talented cast of ten perform all twenty-two roles including Aden Gillet (The House of Elliot, Casualty) and Philip Whitchurch (Billy Elliot, Sharpe, My Hero), in stunning 18th century style costumes with folk songs of the period performed by Tim Van Eyekn (War Horse).

This is a major touring revival produced by the acclaimed Original Theatre Company following on from their success with recent productions which included the MTA Award nominated Dancing At Lughnasa, See How They Run, The Madness of George III and Journey’s End.
