The subject of the talk is ‘Training for War: Life in First World War Training Camps in Newhaven and Sussex’. “The life suits me and I have adapted myself to it, but am a different boy from the one you knew.” This line, written by Private Sugden in a letter to his sweetheart while training at Newhaven, expresses how he has adjusted to army life. But did all new recruits feel the same? This illustrated talk, by Jenny Flood, will look at the experiences of men training for war in Newhaven and the surrounding area.
