Eastbourne Operatic & Dramatic Society: Guys and Dolls, Devonshire Park Theatre, Eastbourne, May 22-26, nightly at 7.30pm ( mats Wed and Sat 2.30pm).

WHEN EODS first chose Guys and Dolls it was agreed a new fresh approach was needed for the traditional musical set in Damon Runyon’s mythical New York City, which introduces us to a cast of vivid characters who have become legends but are still relevant today.

There is no doubt that in all aspects the Society has stepped up to the challenge with high energy and a nod to the past combining yesterday with today.

The bespoke sets have been especially designed by Andy Newell from ideas put by director, Nick Reynolds. Their creation incorporates a lot of detail, some of which is three dimensional, enabling exciting and different lighting effects to be used.

At present the work is intensive, but on track, so all will be ready for opening night.

Andy is freelance frequently working in Tunbridge Wells but is well known in Eastbourne for the many sets for the Variety shows at the Royal Hippodrome and creating the scenery for Chris Jordan’s pantomimes.

Now going international he has recently been responsible for the settings for Pinocchio, the UK Premier Disney version in Stevenage at the Gordon Craig Theatre, which is travelling on to Dubai in the autumn.

Tickets available from 01323 412000.
