Petworth Town Council had been hoping to be able to provide some Christmas cheer this winter after what has been ‘a challenging year’. It was revealed last week that the popular annual Christmas event would take place on Saturday, December 5 – subject to Government guidelines.

However, ‘despite a great deal of interest’ from market traders, the event is unable to go ahead.

A town council spokesperson said: “Petworth Town Council has regretfully made the decision to cancel the 2020 Christmas Event.

“Due the current challenges we are all facing, it is felt that the safest thing to do is to cancel this year’s event.

“Many of the town’s shops will be opening seven days a week during December so we do hope those who usually attend our Christmas event will visit the town during December and support our local businesses.

“Thank you for your understanding.”

The town’s Christmas event has been extremely popular over recent years, with a huge turnout in 2019.

Festivities which have been provided at the event in previous years include entertainment provided by singers, local choirs from schools and choral societies, the town band, Father Christmas, lantern making and parade, buskers, magician and funfair.
