5. Eastbourne
For those who want to visit a beach that's a bit quieter than Brighton, Eastbourne is definitely the place to go. The elegant Victorian pier is perfect for an afternoon stroll and offers cafes, a chip shop, a nightclub and traditional tea rooms. The stony beach itself is a tranquil and open space with a gentle slope down to the water. It's close the town centre too, with a wonderful array of quirky seaside shops that are full of all sorts of curiosities and bargains. Go at the right time and you might catch a musical performance on the beautiful bandstand. Perfect for a chilled family day out. Photo: Staff
6. Bognor Regis
Bognor Regis has everything you could want from a trip to the beach, with none of the hassle of a bit-city destination like Brighton. Win yourself a prize in the pier arcade, grab an award-winning ice cream at Pink's Scoops, and stop off for some fresh fish and chips at one of the many seafront eateries, all before soaking up the sun on the pebble beach and cooling off in the water. If pubs are more your speed, you'll be spoilt for choice - The Waverley, in Aldwick, is a short walk along the promenade, and features an outdoor terrace perfect for a pint in the sun. Photo: Staff
7. Camber Sands
Camber Sands, along from the Rye, is one of the busiest beaches in Sussex. Its long stretches of sand can attract thousands of people during sunny days in the summer. There are three car parks (pay on arrival) operated by Rother District Council. It has good facilities with shops, pubs and restaurants close by. If you plan to use an inflatable, be aware of off-shore winds which can blow them out to sea if not tethered. Camber is home to the only sand dune system in East Sussex, which provides a home to many animals and plants. There is a Water Sports Zone, suitable for kite surfing and other water sports activities, located at the Broomhill car park. To make the beach a safer environment for families, it is zoned to separate activities. Photo: Contributed
8. Shoreham Beach
Shoreham Beach offers a quieter place for people keen to be beside the seaside. It has been designated a Local Nature Reserve because of it's vegetated shingle and it features a lengthy boardwalk – both to protect the plants and make the beach accessible to all. The beach is popular with families, kite surfers, windsurfers and paddleboarders and at its eastern end is Shoreham Fort – built in the 1850s and now a scheduled monument. Photo: Steve Robards
