Unique festival collaboration

HQ Gallery in Lewes is hosting a collaboration between artists Billy Childish and Gary Goodman during the Brighton Festival (May 5 to 27). Both are painters and writers, and will be reading their poetry at the opening reception.

Childish is often mentioned in the press in the same breath as Tracey Emin, once his long-term partner. He is a musician, poet and artist who has published more than 40 collections of poetry, written three novels, recorded more than 100 full-length independent LPs and produced more than 2,500 paintings.

Goodman has exhibited his art and performed his poetry around the world.

The exhibition unites the creative common ground shared by the two men.

Animals often appear alongside humans, a powerful motif expressing our underlying fragility and vulnerability. Both also use colour to convey pain, fear, joy and wonder. Figures are often set in ambiguous landscapes which set up an unsure narrative in a way that directly and emotionally engages the viewer.

Tracey Emin calls Childish 'one of the greatest influences on my life'. And Professor Michael Tucker says: 'There is a great deal of the shamanic in Goodman.'

The exhibition can be viewed on www.hqgallery.co.uk from the opening day. Opening hours are Tuesdays-Saturdays 10.30am- 5pm, Sundays 1-5pm. Details from [email protected].
