Woodland creatures at the museum

YOUNG visitors to Littlehampton Museum are being invited to follow a woodland trail.

Hidden within the museum's galleries are woodland creatures just waiting to be discovered by children.

The trail ties in with a new exhibition at the museum, Woodland Wonders, a display of animal caricatures by wood carver Brian Castle.

Brian will also be at the museum on Saturday, from 11am-3pm, to host demonstration sessions for all ages to see him at work, and perhaps have a go themselves.

Included in his exhibition in the museum's Hearne Room are a menagerie of animals including ducks, penguins, mice, horses, dolphins and various birds, alongside beautiful acrylic wildlife paintings.

Brian taught himself wood carving, and then went on to teach the skill for six years at Northbrook College and at the Shoreham and Southwick adult education centres.

In 1982, he exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Mall Galleries in London, and for the past three decades has had many exhibitions in London and Sussex. His work is in numerous private collections worldwide, including the Duchess of Richmond's and a castle in Cumbria.

Councillor Mark Butler, chair of the town council's community resources committee, described Brian's work as "a fantastic display", adding: "It is great to see the work of such a talented individual in Littlehampton."

The exhibition continues until April 5.
