Community grants supporting local projects Battle Town Council has awarded £2,170 in community grants to five local organisations, supporting projects ranging from youth activities and community transport to energy advice and improvements to a much-used community building. Battle Area Community Transport has received £200 to help promote its community transport service to residents in Battle and the surrounding area. Battle Memorial Hall has been awarded £500 towards repairs to its front entrance Battle Solar Town will receive £490 to fund Home Energy Assessments. The assessments are intended to help local households identify potential energy savings and improvements, particularly where residents are facing increased energy costs. Battle Youth Zone has been awarded £680 towards the equipment and project costs needed to establish activities for young people in Battle. The group aims to provide a free, welcoming place for local young people to meet and take part in activities. Finally, Battle 88th Squadron Air Cadets has received £300. The project aims to create a distinctive squadron identity drawing on Battle’s history and the squadron’s longstanding connection with the town. Together, the awards show the range of community activity taking place across Battle and how relatively small grants can help local organisations develop services, facilities and opportunities for residents. Around the Recreation Ground There is plenty happening at the Recreation Ground this autumn. Residents can visit the café while Battle Town Football Club’s season brings regular sporting activity to the ground. The café has had lots of useful feedback and suggestions some of which are already being incorporated. The café is open 7 days a week and has everything from coffee to ice creams so should be able to cover you, whatever the weather! Battle will also come together for Remembrance on Wednesday 11 November with residents invited to gather at the Abbey Green at 10:30am, ceremony starts at 10:45am. Memorial Safety Inspections at Battle Cemetery and St Mary’s Churchyard Battle Town Council has completed its annual memorial safety inspections at Battle Cemetery and St Mary’s Churchyard. Following visual checks and hand-testing, a small number of unstable memorials have been carefully laid flat for safety. Memorial maintenance is the responsibility of the burial grant holder. Where memorials are less than ten years old, the Council will endeavour to contact the grant holder if repairs are needed. Please do not attempt to reposition memorials - repairs must be undertaken by a registered stonemason, with the Council notified so that a further safety inspection can be arranged. Visitors are also reminded that glass vases, ornaments and solar lights are not permitted and will be removed, while plastic flowers are not allowed at Battle Cemetery. Full cemetery regulations are available on the Council’s website or from the Council office. Anyone with questions about the inspections or an affected memorial is welcome to contact the Council office. Email: enquiries@battletowncouncil.gov.uk or call 01424 772210.
