A tour of ancient history

Organiser Heather Morrey says the course, entitled New World Civilisations, consists of three Saturday afternoon sessions and will give people the chance to look at a few of the topics covered in the radio series in more depth.

Heather said: “Tutor Ken Brooks has travelled widely in Central America and brings his own slides and enthusiasm to his courses which are held at Bexhill Museum.

“This gives students a chance to look at some related objects which are on display.

“On November 13 we look at The Moche who were creating one of the most remarkable cultures of the New World at the time when the great Egyptian civilisation was declining. Their beautiful and distinctive pots featuring animals and mythological characters fascinate museum visitors.

“On November 20 we move on to a ‘lost world’ where the Maya people lived from 550 BC to the mid 16th century. It was only re-discovered in the 1840s. Chichen Itza was found under dense vegetation in the Yucatan and had a spectacular pyramid, a ball court, an observatory and a sacrificial well.

“On November 27 we look at the Aztecs, just one of the nomadic groups moving into the valley of Mexico in the 13th century AD. Within 200 years they had built a great city and gained control over much of Central Mexico. Their unfortunate destiny was prophesied in a huge carved stone.”

The sessions run from 2pm-4.30pm and cost £8.50 each or £24 for the whole course.
