Blues rock royalty King King head to Crawley's Hawth

Founder Alan Nimmo said: “We have just recorded a live album and a DVD and will be releasing something in the autumn.

“It was just a question of picking the right venue, and we had played this particular venue in Holmfirth in Yorkshire a couple of times. We felt it was a comfortable sound, and it is a nice venue.”

At which point it simply became a question of trying to forget that the red light was on.

“You have just got to do the gig and forget about the recording and just try to have a good time, but the recording does come into your mind. But we managed to pull it off. I was just trying to watch my language! But at the same time I was trying to get the audience not to shout out anything naughty!

“I suppose it influences the set as well, but if you are doing a live album, it is best just to do the show you have been doing and that you are comfortable with, just to be in the moment you are in. We picked the best set we have been playing and added a few things.

“Really, it is about capturing the sense, the vibe, about capturing the essence.

“But really first and foremost, the live album is something that has been demanded for so long. We pride ourselves on our live shows, and people have been asking for a long time when we were going to do a live album. People go to a live show and enjoy it and then maybe they talk about it for a couple of days, but then that’s it. But with a live album, the fans have got something they can keep that’s permanent.

“People think that a live album is all about precise playing, but it is not. It is about capturing the feel of the night.”

It will be King King’s first live album; they are also working on their next studio album, which will be their fourth.

“I think it must be something like six years that we have been going now, and for us, I honestly think it has surpassed all our expectations. Lindsay Coulson, the bass player, and I started the band together. We had an idea about putting a great blues band together and then making it a reasonable success in that arena. We just had the idea that we wanted to progress it. We have worked really hard, and it has all come together.”

In 2014, King King won a total of five 2014 British Blues Awards, including Best Album and Best Band.

“We have just had the ambition to keep going and to keep getting better. We went through different drummers and keyboard players just to try to find the right formula. All the guys we have worked with have been great, fantastic musicians and great friends, but in the past few years we have really honed down the right formula for the band.”

In Crawley, their special guest will be South African Blues rock guitarist and singer-songwriter Dan Patlansky, whose Dear Silence Thieves album was voted number one on Blues Rock Review’s Top 20 Blues Rock Albums of 2014.
