Cooden Millennium Afternoon TWG

OUR October meeting was on a typical autumn day. The chairman, Mrs K Murphy, welcomed members and guests to the Guild.

The lunch club enjoyed a very pleasant meal at Guestling. Our numbers were depleted as several people were poorly.

With so many events organised leading up to Christmas, the lunch club will be discontinued until the New Year. However Dorothy has arranged a lunch at the Harvester, Polegate, on October 20 at 12noon for anyone interested.

Next month our sales table will be devoted to Christmas. Members are asked to bring something festive to be sold to help funds.

There will be a competition for the best-decorated or most unusual candle, after which the candles will be auctioned.

We received a letter from the Alzheimer’s Research Trust thanking the Guild for our donation last month of £500. In the Observer was a very nice photo of the cheque being presented.

An outing has been arranged to Polehill Garden Centre on Thursday November 18 to visit their attractive Christmas Fair. Tickets still available.

Our present treasurer will be retiring in the New Year. We cannot operate without a treasurer. Any member who would be prepared to undertake the position please contact the chairman or secretary.

We had a very interesting talk by our secretary, Mrs J Saunders, on her two-year stay in Thailand when she accompanied her husband there on business.

Thailand, previously called Siam, is twice the size of the UK. It has a monsoon climate and can be very hot and humid. The languages spoken include Thai, Chinese, Malay and English.

Thais are mainly Buddists. The country is greatly influenced by India and China. The speaker was located in Bangkok where the traffic was always heavy and quite chaotic.

Motorcycles were in the majority and we were amused by the description of the number of passengers packed on to a machine - often a whole family.

The people in the country at the time of the visit suffered great poverty with extremes of great wealth. Shopping facilities in Bangkok were very good with English food available.

The choice of stores was huge with four shopping malls like Bluewater. Visiting the hairdresser was a lovely experience as it always included a head massage.

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday November 3 - remember your candles and festive articles.

We are a friendly club and welcome new members and visitors.

We meet in Little Common Community Centre at 2pm on the first Wednesday of each month.
