IF SOMEONE’S got a good eye for making a buck then you may well see ‘Minions’ in the shops as toys this Christmas.

These yellow capsule shaped creatures are arguably the real stars of this fun movie.

They have their own language and each has its own character, providing some of the best comic moments in the film.

And before you get up to leave while the credits are rolling at the end, stick around as three Minions make full use of the 3D in an attempt to reach the audience.

The storyline centres on Gru (Carell), a truly despicable character whose idea of queue jumping is to freeze everyone in front of him.

But Gru’s dominance as a top baddy is under threat from ‘Vector’ (Segel), a nerdy young man who has stolen one of the pyramids to show how good he is. So Gru has to come up with an even grander plan - how about shrinking and stealing the moon?

But he needs to infiltrate Vector’s stronghold and that’s where three young girls from the local orphanage come in. Gru adopts them and that’s when his troubles start.

As with all good films of this type, there’s a great tale for kids who will enjoy the trio of orphans, while for the older ones, the Minions supply plenty of humour and Russell Brand is brilliant as the ageing professor Dr Nefario.

This is a rare film that actually benefits from 3D and one scene with a rollercoaster ride is very effective, as is the trip to the moon.

So, if you want a family film and a fun night out then Despicable Me will fit the bill.

four out of five stars
