Fairtrade festival returns to serve up a treat this March
“The Burgess Hill Fairtrade Festival is returning for a seventh year,” says Fairtrade chair Robert Eggleston. “And we will be serving up a real March treat.”
It opens on Friday, March 6, with a Beer, Wine and Food Festival to show that local produce and Fairtrade work side by side.
There will be local beers and cider and locally produced cheeses, pickles and sausages alongside Fairtrade wine and Fairtrade treats such as Liberation nuts and Quinoa. There is also live music with Shady Grove and Underhound, plus a Fairtrade themed photo booth.
Then on Saturday, March 7, the festival plays host to the excellent folk trio Faustus. Faustus have been described as everything that is best in traditional music. This is no surprise since the trio includes two members of super folk band Bellowhead (Paul Sartin and Benji Kirkpatrick) plus Waterson Carthy stalwart Saul Rose.
They are supported by singer-songwriter Mike Reinstein from Hassocks and Freya Morris and Faye Stubbs, two rising stars from Horsted Keynes.
Other events include Sunday Lunch at The Woolpack Pub on March 8, where traditional lunches are topped off with sumptuous Fairtrade desserts and Fairtrade wine. The afternoon and evening is then given over to an exploration in worship called God’s Treasure, which is being hosted by Sheddingdean Baptist Church and led by international worship leaders Nigel Cameron and Julie Cameron-Hall.
The festival’s topic for discussion this year takes on the hot issue of overseas aid with ‘The Point of Aid’ on Tuesday, March 11. Guest speakers include Richard Miller, executive director of ActionAid.
On Friday, March 13, the Fairtrade Festival invites you to party the night away at Simply Cuban. This Salsa night features live Cuban band Son Guarachando, which has been leading the UK salsa music scene for the past decade. Come and dance or just listen while sipping a Cuban cocktail.
Then on Saturday, March 14, Rock for Fairtrade returns with the Final of The One – a rock and pop competition for young bands and solo artists.
The final event of the festival is on Sunday, March 15 – Mother’s Day Classics with the Marsyas Trio.
A really great festival is in store and people can check out the website for more details.
