Brighton garden design studio featured on BBC’s The One Show

Fern & Pine, an award-winning garden design studio based in Brighton, has been featured on The One Show after one of its locally designed gardens was selected for filming as part of a national BBC segment.
The Moroccan-inspired courtyard garden, located in central Brighton, was chosen as a filming location to mark the launch of the 2026 RHS and BBC The One Show's Pocket Garden Makeover Prize on Thursday 26 February. The project demonstrates how thoughtful design can transform even the most compact outdoor spaces into beautiful, functional environments.
Rich in colour, texture and pattern, the courtyard creates a secluded sanctuary that reflects the homeowners’ passion for Moroccan design and outdoor living. The scheme combines architectural structure with layered planting, warm materials and decorative detailing to create a space that feels both intimate and generous.
Carefully considered planting and layered lighting allow the garden to function seamlessly from day into evening, while strategic spatial planning divides the courtyard into two distinct zones: an intimate outdoor dining space within the side return and a relaxed lounging area in the main garden. This zoning allows the space to support entertaining, socialising and quiet retreat within a compact footprint.

Privacy was a key consideration in the urban setting. Trellis screening, pergolas, laser-cut metal panels and layered planting create enclosure without reducing light, while climbers will continue to enhance privacy as they mature. Decorative tiling, a Moroccan-style water feature and warm-toned materials introduce movement and atmosphere, complemented by integrated lighting, sound and irrigation systems that ensure the garden performs year-round.
Alick Nee, founder of Fern & Pine, said: “This project shows how even the smallest gardens can become transformative spaces when design, planting and craftsmanship work together. We wanted to create something that felt immersive and transportive, while still being practical for everyday use.”
“Being featured on national television is an incredibly proud moment for us as a Brighton-based studio. It highlights the strength of local design talent and the growing demand for outdoor spaces that enhance both lifestyle and property value.”
Fern & Pine specialises in contemporary residential garden design across Sussex and Surrey, creating elegant outdoor spaces that enrich daily living and connect people more closely with nature.

The garden was designed by Alick Nee, Design Director at Fern & Pine, and built by long-standing local landscape contractors Grove Gardens, with lighting & AV by another local firm Todd Roberts Lighting.
