Let’s keep volunteer spirit burning brightly in Littlehampton

LITTLEHAMPTON bonfire organisers are hoping to capitalise on the Olympic spirit as they appeal for more volunteers to help stage their 60th anniversary celebrations next month.

The town’s bonfire society needs more volunteers to help with marshalling duties on the night – October 27 – and to build the massive bonfire on The Green in the week leading up to the occasion.

Society secretary Richard Cooper said: “The success of the 2012 London Olympics was in part due to the efforts of the tens of thousands of volunteer ‘games makers’.

“It is all too easy to take for granted a community event which has taken place annually for 60 years, but we can only continue to stage our traditional celebrations if more volunteers come forward to assist with the numerous tasks throughout the year necessary for Bonfire Night to take place in Littlehampton.”

He added that help was also needed with clearing up the following day.

“This is a major event which keeps the town on the map, but it requires a great deal of manpower and we need more people to come forward to offer to help us if it is to continue.”

Building of the bonfire starts at 9am on Monday, October 22, and continues to 5.30pm each day, until Thursday, October 25. Marshals are needed to assist with general crowd control and other duties on the day.

Anyone who can help is asked to e-mail [email protected] or contact Tyndall Jones at David O. Jones Sports or Richard Cooper on 01903 725149.
