Littlehampton’s sporting heritage in the spotlight

TO COINCIDE with this summer’s Olympics, Littlehampton Museum has taken an affectionate look back at the town’s own sporting heritage.

The display shows dozens of archive pictures of sports teams – past and present – with added information about the town’s existing organisations, the Littlehampton Croquet Club, Howard Lawn Tennis Club, the Littlehampton Amateur Boxing Club and the Arun Youth Aqua Centre.

The exhibition, Our Sporting Life, also features an in-depth history of the town’s Sports Field, which was donated by the 15th Duke of Norfolk, Henry Fitzalan-Howard, in 1897 and is this year celebrating its 115th anniversary.

There are a range of photos of the 11-acre field, some including the now-demolished water tower, as well as others showing some of the competitive fixtures that took place there.

Other pictures at the exhibition, in the Community Gallery, shed light on a few of the more bizarre tales of the town’s sporting heritage, including one shot of a man, parachuting high above the town from a hot-air balloon, during the summer of 1909.

The exhibit is open until July 20.
