ON a blustery January day members, visitors and new members were welcomed to our first meeting of the New Year by our president who remarked on the large number of 'funny Christmas cards' entered into the competition.

Attention was drawn to the various items of information on the Notice Board '“ June AGM at Liverpool, March Annual Council Meeting at Eastbourne, the South of England Show; arrangements were discussed about going to the Craft Day at Uckfield and attendance at the Resolution Discussion meeting.

Our ACWW representative gave us more information about the International Conference held in Finland, the welfare services available for women and the work towards global peace and harmony. A suggestion was made that, in order to support Free Trade Fortnight, we make 'Free Trade' cakes and biscuits to sell at our February meeting and donate the proceeds to ACWW.

Diaries were consulted now that we had our new programme and outings suggested for the coming year as well as dates for three lunches - it looks like being a busy year.

Whilst coffee was being prepared our president gave us a brief glimpse into the pleasures and disappointments of her Christmas and New Year break.

After coffee David Harrison gave us a very informative idea of the 'History of Gatwick Airport' where he had worked for over 30 years. We saw slides of the early days in that area when the race course was the main attraction right up to the present day with many facts, figures and anecdotes of his time at the airport and he was proud of the numerous 'firsts' which were introduced there such as the first auto-bus.

Our next meeting will be at 10am on February 14 at St. Peter's Community Centre when our speaker will be Clive Richardson, his subject 'Snowdrops and Winter Gardens' and the competition 'a small seasonal posy'.
