Spokeswoman Kerry Betsworth said: “An important edit of four never-before-seen works by seminal English artist Ivon Hitchens (1893-1979) will be exhibited for sale at Candida Stevens Fine Art, Chichester, in the late artist’s home county of West Sussex.

“These works form part of a double bill with current, and equally-celebrated English artist Stephen Chambers whose etchings, screenprints and paintings will also be exhibited for sale.”

Kerry added: “Hitchens, began his career in the 1920s and became part of the influential London Group. He retreated to live and work in West Sussex in 1940, creating bold, fresh panoramic landscapes with his expressive broad-brush technique and strong commitment to colour.

The South Downs were Hitchens’ earliest love. Hitchens’ paintings are held in all of the most important UK and many international public collections. To celebrate the return home of this modern master’s pieces, Candida Stevens Fine Art Gallery will also be hosting accompanying talks and events on the artist’s life and work.

“Stephen Chambers, one of Britain’s current, celebrated artists began his artistic journey just down the road from Hitchens in Winchester. Chambers’ colourful, exquisite and detailed work explores, in his own words ‘states of mind, behaviours and sensibilities.’

“Chambers responds to nature’s energy and imperfection with uplifting use of colour and geometrical patterns that are overlaid with exuberant firefly-like dots and carefully applied pattern taken from older traditions of ornament in western and eastern art. Stephen Chambers will also be visiting the gallery to provide a talk on his latest work and themes.

“Curator Candida Stevens named the show Fireflies in the Garden, after a Robert Frost poem, a poet revered by Chambers. On conjuring up the work of Chambers, Candida visualises fireflies and the work of Hitchens the English garden so the title embraced the work of each.”

Candida Stevens Fine Art is at 12 Northgate, Chichester. Opening times are Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10am-5pm.
