It’s a strange thing to say you enjoy true crime documentaries, but for a lot of us it’s true.

And if you binge watch pretty much every true crime documentary that comes on the TV like I do, then you’ve probably heard of Emma Kenny – an expert with a background in psychology who features on many such programmes.

Her ability to analyse the minds and motives of murderers is fascinating to me, so it was very exciting to be at her live show Murderous Minds with Emma Kenny at Theatre Royal Brighton last night.

I wasn’t sure how the evening would work, but first Emma talks though the different motivations murderers have, and well as the ways they manifest themselves.

And then she moves onto exploring several cases, most of which the audience will have heard of, and dissecting what led to such heinous acts.

Even though I had heard a lot of the news and documentaries about these cases, hearing Emma’s critical assessment was so interesting.

What was so important to me was that the victims weren’t lost in this process. Emma talked about them in such a thoughtful way, and shared their stories. They weren’t just casually mentioned as names, but details of their rich lives were shared with us as an audience.

Emma was also careful to recognise her audience as part of an almost ‘club’ of armchair detectives. She spoke to us in a way that assumed knowledge and made us feel better about being interested in horrible crimes (apparently people who like true crime are likely to be greater empaths).

And best of all, to briefly lighten the mood, there was a proposal on stage after the interval. Wishing lots of luck to Camile and Ryan!

It was an unusual way to spend an evening, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
