I’m ashamed to admit it, but I hadn’t really followed much of Professor Brian Cox’s work before I saw him live on stage.
But my dad is a massive fan, and so as I was lucky enough to be offered review tickets we went to the second of his two-night run at the Brighton Centre together.
And now I’m just gutted that for years I’ve been missing out on his brilliance. Because – wow! – that might be the most incredible show I’ve ever sat through.

For two hours, I was absolutely mesmerised by every word the professor said. Because not only is he a hugely respected physicist who has contributed to landmark science programs for BBC radio and television over the last 15 years, he is also an incredibly engaging speaker.
He appears to deliver his Emergence show without any notes or an auto-prompter, and delivers it as if it’s his first time doing it – with genuine excitement, enthusiasm and wonder.
There’s no doubt he is incredibly intelligent, and my brain did have to work hard to keep up with the concepts sometimes, but he makes subject matter than in the hands of somebody else could be impenetrable totally relatable.
It is impossible not to walk out in complete awe of nature and be bowled over by the work being done by physicists, cosmologists, biologists and others around the world to help us answer so many questions about the universe.
Emergence taught me so much about the universe and made me appreciate just how precious human life is, while at the same time being a tiny, almost irrelevant speck on the timeline of the earth.
The show will spend two years touring the globe, and it’s easy to see why so many people want to go and see it.
The technology used to present it is top-notch, with a huge LED screen, dazzling lasers, brilliant lighting and a musical score that just screams wonderment. There wasn’t a single element that didn’t complement another one.
I defy anyone to come away without a new-found curiosity for the world and far, far beyond. It was simply brilliant.
