World War Two 
sitcom hits stage in hilarious adaptation

They are offering the stage version of the sitcom, which ran for ten years from 1982 and was created by David Croft and Jeremy Lloyd.

Spokeswoman Jackie Charman said: “The story is set in a small town café in Nazi-occupied France during World War Two where the German military have occupied the town and have stolen all of its valuable artefacts.

“These include a painting of The Fallen Madonna by Van Klomp, known to those who have seen it as The Fallen Madonna with the Big Boobies.

“The local commandants have decided to keep the painting for themselves after the war and force the cafe owner, René, to hide it in his café. Poor René wants, but never achieves, the quiet life. Caught between the French Resistance, two bumbling British airmen, the German army, the Gestapo, the Italians and his need to keep secret from his wife his long-running affairs with his two waitresses, René never gets a moment’s peace.”

Jackie added: “This hilarious play will appeal to those who enjoy farcical situation comedy and contains some sexual innuendo, amusingly ridiculous fake accents and a fast-paced string of broad cultural clichés. It is, in fact, the perfect antidote for the politically-correct world we now inhabit.”

Billingshurst Dramatic Society meets at the Women’s Hall, High Street, Billingshurst on Monday and Thursday evenings when rehearsing for its three productions a year.
