Town’s superb festival of music

Kick starting the month long Bexhill Festival of Music, a few days earlier than usual, world renowned pianist Imogen Cooper entertained audiences with her classical repertoire at the De La Warr Pavilion (DLWP) on Saturday (May 24), followed by a packed house on Monday as music lovers flocked to see the BBC Big Band conducted by Barry Forgie, featuring Claire Martin as they celebrated the legendary leading ladies of Big Band.

This year’s festival is packed with an exciting array of music covering all genres and Chairman Tony Mansi said he hopes there is something for everyone. “Tonight (Friday May 30) will see Alex Horne and The Horne Section and Sunday will be the official opening with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra playing the Great Classics featuring no less than 60 musicians. Both performances will be at the DLWP and there are still a few tickets available.”

Jazz, folk, soul, Motown, rock, swing, Elvis Tribute and Oasis tributes, and a rip roaring barn dance are just some of the music events the festival will have on offer.

This weekend sees music venue No.48 on Devonshire Road host a 2 day free music festival with 16 different live performances described as “fabulous home grown locally reared talent”.

Georgia Faye Steele kicks the event off with her soulful voice and silky piano skills at 1pm on Saturday (May 31), followed by the prodigious Mollie Tucker who covers folk, and pop songs, still only 16 she writes her own music. Other artists offering a wide range of music including rock, pop, folk, soul and Jazz include the soulful calypso style of the Harry Osbourne band.

Sunday will have more of a band feel, starting at 1pm with some rock ‘n roll from the 60-70s with Terry Ballard followed by the covers band No Exit. Olivia Cooper will perform pop and soul.

The Exiles will be on from 4pm with folk and blues. Donations gratefully accepted to support next years Bexhill Festival Of Music.
