Ukeleles join together in Rye Festival

Rye was alive with the sound of Ukuleles when over 100 musicians joined together to strum through “a wonderful sunny afternoon.” Visitors gathered in the garden at the Cinque Ports Inn to listen to bands from Kent and East Sussex – including Rye, Headcorn, Wadhurst, East Grinstead, Doddington, Deal, Lewes, and Folkestone, with funds raised for St Michael’s Hospice.

An eclectic variety of music from each group was rounded off with a rousing Big Busk. The world record attempt for Kazoo and Uke played together was highly entertaining and it was estimated 300 players took part.

Lorna Hall, an organiser, said: “We are astounded at the interest this first festival has gathered and will certainly consider another similar event next year - when we’ve recovered from this one.” She thanked MC Ian Burford, sponsors Rye Town Council, EDF, The Windmill Guest House, many Rye businesses which donated to the raffle, Kirsty Doherty, Jonathan and team at the Cinque Ports, and sound man Andy B.
