Simon Tauber, 51, of Alfold, is walking a 500-mile five-week pilgrimage across Spain in aid of the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity in memory of his mother.

He said: “I want to deal with the issue of grief. When I lost my mother I found the grief was so unbelievably profound.

“We all know we are going to lose someone but when it actually happens the absolute debilitating effect of it is unimaginable. My whole life stopped.”

The self-described ‘completely mediocre’ songwriter wants to raise enough money to justify the £2,000 he will spend on the walk.

Instead of asking for donations he wants to create a website to help those in mourning. He lost his mother Margaret ‘Maggie’ Taube to leukaemia six years ago.

The site would allow users to upload tributes to their loved ones in return of a donation to the cancer charity.

Simon continued: “Letting goodness come out of sadness that’s really what I’m trying to do.

“I want to achieve something exceptional.”

Simon will carry 10kg for an average of 15 miles every day. At an ‘historically important and beautiful’ cathedral where he will read out the names of loved ones uploaded on to the site, on request.

He continued: “I would like to be stuck in this cathedral for ages because the more I’m stuck there the more money I raise for The Royal Marsden.

“I always swore that I would help the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.

“I wanted to give something back - they gave my mother a chance of living and superb care and she just happened to lose the battle.”

Maggie was an ‘amazing’ and charitable person who often spent more time caring for others before herself, said Simon.

“I’m 51-years-old but you still feel a child when you are with your mum.”

Speaking about his career in the music industry, he said: “I’m a completely mediocre writer who had a bit of luck.

“I just don’t think I’ve done much with my life and this really excites me.

“If I can make this a success I would like to think I’ve found what I want to do really.”

He added: “Without a website this is just an idea.

“I’ll pay what I can pay but I badly need a good website - that’s the absolute urgency and any website company or designer will get full accreditation.”
